There are more than 200 different compounds that have been detected in human breath, some of which have been correlated to various diseases. Breath analysis can be used a point of care diagnostic tool for disease management, regular monitoring using breath tests would lead to more effective patient treatment, the reduction of healthcare costs, reduced visits to the your GP and a shift to more proactive treatments.
Exhaled breath analysis has significant potential as a non-invasive and easy means of monitoring the types and concentrations of substances that might serve as markers for particular diseases, particularly in non-diseased subjects. Also they can be used in patients with severe disease, which has been previously difficult to monitor, and disease in children, including infants.
The development of nanotechnology based sensors will facilitate the development of easy to use analyzers, which could be used in hospitals and also by GPs. Such devices could also eventually be used as personal monitoring analyzers for use by patients.
